Oral care routine tips from a dentist in Calgary
At Living Wellness Dental Northland, we offer many dental services to help our patients who are in need of care. Whether it’s professional cleanings, restorative care, or cosmetic improvements, we help our patients enjoy healthier, more beautiful smiles.
Regular visits to a dentist are a very important aspect of oral health. Visits allow us to monitor the mouth for any early signs of decay or disease. We also perform professional cleanings which can eliminate difficult plaque and tartar build-up, helping to prevent decay.
Just as professional care is important, at-home oral care routines are extremely important to the health of the mouth. We share the following information with all of our patients to help avoid plaque build-up.
- Be focused when you brush your teeth. Most people brush their teeth, but are unaware that they aren’t brushing properly. Using a soft-bristled brush, you will want to make sure to brush every surface of every tooth in a circular motion and do not forget the tongue! Using an electric toothbrush can really help.
- Use either a Rotadent or floss. While many patients want to floss, most forget on a regular basis. The problem with this is that food particles easily become trapped in the tiny crevices between teeth. These particles are nearly impossible to remove by regular brushing alone and become bacteria breeding grounds. The Rotadent has benefited these patients incredibly. We didn’t believe it either but our evidence shows it cleans the teeth as effectively as floss in one step. Ask us how we know that! It also doesn’t require toothpaste. Alternatively to floss correctly, take about 12-18 inches of floss and move it up and down the surface of the tooth.
- Rinse if you are unable to brush. Rinsing with water, or even chewing a piece of sugarless gum can increase saliva flow and help remove food particles when you are unable to brush after a meal.
- Eat a well-balanced diet. Bacteria feed on sugar-laden and high carbohydrate foods. Make sure to consume a diet with proteins, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
- Quit Smoking. Smoking and Tobacco use put your oral health and overall wellness at risk. We’re happy to help with cessation resources.
